My Reading Wheelhouse!

Well I’m finally doing it. I’m starting a book blog. Indubitably, it was only a matter of time before I finally did it. With the end of sight for my Graduate program (and the invitation to an amazing blog tour) here we are.

I think the best place to start is definitely with an introduction and what better way to introduce myself then with my reading wheelhouse (an idea that has been borrowed with love from one of my favorite book podcasts Reading Glasses- go check them out!)

(Gather the Daughters is a coming of age tale
about an island bound cult that needs
  all the trigger warnings!)
So, without further ado, I present to you the sorts of books I will buy if any of these elements are included.

1- I love any story about cults. This includes, but is not limited to: people leaving cults, joining cults, starting cults, investigating cults, etc.) Any genre.
2- Survival stories. To be more specific, I adore plots in which the survivor is injured in some way or has to face seemingly insurmountable obstacles beyond merely surviving).

Wicked River by Jenny Milchman
• Into the Jungle by Erica Ferencik

(A Place for Sinners is one of the darkest books
I have ever read. You are not ready for this book.)

3- Body horror (especially stories where people get eaten from the inside out. I'm not sure what that says about me.)

4- YA fantasy. I love all fantasy. But I frequently find myself especially drawn to dark fantasy that doesn't include any form of happily ever after or "true love's kiss". If a book is described as a "dark fantasy" I buy it, no questions asked.

(I will admit I was skeptical about a book where
no one can open their eyes; but Bird Box was amazing.)

5-
Any horror novel that involves an unseen (especially supernatural) threat. I find the ambiguity terrifying but delightful.

6- Contemporary stories that handle heavy issues in a thought provoking and respectful way. Weirdly, these types of stories usually function as "palette cleansers"  between darker stuff that I read.

7- Finally, those stories where you get to the end and realize that the whole book you just read wasn't the book or story you thought you were reading. I guess I like that heavy dose of shock that comes when your perceptions of reality are completely turned on their head.

And there you have it. I am so excited to be starting on this journey with all of you, my dear readers.

I would love it if you could comment below with your own wheelhouse. My hope, once I get a nice collection of reader wheelhouse, is to share them on my blog on a regular basis. Maybe some people will even find their reading twin! (that's the dream, right!?)

Until next time. May you read good books and snuggle cute animals
